The 4-4-4-4 Framework Explained Simply
Career counselling can feel random. One talk, one quiz, then nothing. The 4-4-4-4 Framework is a simple plan that fixes this. It is a new model by William Cognity. It gives every session a clear purpose.
The big idea
The framework has four layers. Each layer has four parts. That makes sixteen pieces. Every career conversation fits into one of them.
- Four factors: Personality, Skills, Interests and Goals. These tell you who the student is.
- Four stages: Discover, Explore, Decide, and Act and Review. These tell you where the student is.
- Four experiences: Reflect and Assess, Research and Compare, Experience and Engage, and Plan and Review. These are the things you do together.
- Four progress indicators: Self-Awareness, Career Knowledge, Decision Readiness and Action Progress. These show how the student is growing.
Layer one: the four factors
You learn about each factor from more than one source. You ask for real examples. You never treat a personality type as destiny, and you never mix up grades with potential.
Layer two: the four stages
In Discover you build trust and hear the student's story. In Explore you widen options and check sources. In Decide the student weighs what matters and picks a first choice. In Act and Review you set dated steps and a review date.
Layer three: the four experiences
This is your menu. You might run a strengths interview, compare two courses, arrange a talk with an employer, or build a 90-day roadmap. You pick the experience that fits the stage.
Layer four: the four indicators
You score each indicator on its own from 0 (emerging) to 3 (evidenced). These scores guide feedback. They are not exam marks, and you do not compare students with each other.
A short example
A Year 10 student says, "I like biology, but I do not want to be a doctor." The counsellor hears the whole story, compares three real options with checked sources, helps the student choose what matters most, and sets a 90-day plan with a review date.
An honest note
The framework is a proposed model. Experts have not tested it yet. It does not claim that four is a magic number. Use it with your school's rules, and treat any assessment as one source of information.
